The ONLY Video That TRULY Explains Synchronicities1 | Alan Watts

Synchronicity

(Introduction – The Mystery of Synchronically)

(…and suddenly without warning, they appear at your door. Or you wake with a question burning in your mind. Something you can’t quite articulate, and later that day you open a book at random, and there staring back at you is the exact answer you were looking for.)

(Now, most people call this coincidence. Some call it luck. The more mystically inclined might say the universe is sending signs that you’re being guided, that you manifested something through the power of your intentions.)

(But if I told you that none of these explanations quite hit the mark? What if the very fact that you find these moments shocking reveals something far more interesting than the moments themselves? What if the surprise you feel is actually pointing to a fundamental mistake in how you’ve been taught to experience reality?)

(You see, coincidence only seems miraculous when you believe you are separate from the world. When you imagine yourself as a little person inside your head, looking out through the window of your eyes at the world that exists independently of you, out there, then yes, when your inner thought and an outer event line up, it feels like magic. It feels like the impossible has occurred. But here’s the uncomfortable truth.)

(That feeling of separation, that sense of being an observer in a bag of skin, is itself an illusion. And synchronicity, these meaningful coincidences we’re talking about, isn’t a miracle at all. It’s simply what becomes visible when the illusion cracks open, even just for a moment. So, let’s explore this together. Not as a lesson, but as a conversation.)

(Because understanding synchronicity isn’t about acquiring new information. It’s about seeing through a mistake you’ve been making your entire life. Let me begin with something most people never question. The feeling that you are you and everything else is not you.)

(From the moment you were born, you’ve been taught to identify with a particular organism. This body, this name, this history, and gradually, without anyone explicitly saying so, you learn to feel like a separate entity, an ego, a self, a consciousness trapped inside a physical container peering out at a world that is fundamentally alien to you.)

(This is what I call the hallucination of the isolated self. And it is, I assure you, one of the most powerful illusions ever created by human consciousness.)

(What is synchronicity?)

(From this viewpoint, reality is divided into two realms. There’s the inside, your thoughts, your feelings, your intentions, your private mental world. And then there’s the outside, events, circumstances, other people, the physical universe unfolding according to its own laws, completely independent of what’s happening in your head.)

(And so naturally, when something you’re thinking about suddenly appears in the external world, it seems extraordinary. It seems like the boundary has been crossed, like some mysterious force has reached from one realm into the other. You think, “How could that happen? What are the odds?” But here’s what you need to understand.)

(The boundary itself is imaginary. You do not come into this world as a separate thing. You come out of it the same way a wave comes out of the ocean, the same way an apple comes out of an apple tree. The universe is not a container been placed inside. You are something the universe is doing. Right here, right now.)

(Think about it. Where do you actually draw the line between you and the world? But your skin is constantly exchanging air, heat, moisture with the environment. Is it at your breath? But you’re breathing the same air as everyone else, the same oxygen that once inside a tree, inside a bird, inside the ocean. Go deeper. Your thoughts, are they truly separate from the world?)

(Every thought you have is shaped by language you learned from others, by experiences you had in specific places, by food you ate that came from the soil, by light that entered your eyes from the sun. You see, the separation is something you’ve been taught to feel, not something that actually exists. And once you realize this, synchronicity stops being mysterious. It becomes obvious.)

(Now, let’s clear about what synchronicity actually is, because there’s a great deal of confusion about this. Synchronicity is not cause and effect. It’s not that your thought caused them to appear, or that your desire manifested the event. That would still be operating within the old framework separation, a separate you wielding power over a separate world. And synchronicity is not a message from the universe, as if the universe were some kinds of cosmic butler arranging events to guide you.)

(That again assumes separation. You over here, the universe over there, communicating across the gap. No. Synchronicity is something far more interesting. It’s what happens when events are connected by meaning, rather than by force, not by mechanical cause, but by pattern, by resonance, by belonging together. Let me give you an image.)

(Think of music, a symphony. Let’s say when the violin plays a certain note and the flute plays another not, the flute didn’t cause the violin’s note, and the violin didn’t cause the flute’s note. They both arose together because they belong to the same composition. They’re part of a single unified piece of music being played.)

(Life is like that. It’s not built like a machine where one gear pushes another gear, which pushes another in a long chain of mechanical causation. Life is built like music, like a dance, like a pattern that expresses itself through many different voices simultaneously.)

(Why Coincidences Feel Meaningful)

(When you think of a friend and they call both of those events, the thought and the call are arising from the same underlying of reality. They’re two notes in the same composition. You notice it because they happen close together in time and they carry similar meaning, but actually everything is synchronized in this way.)

(The entire universe is a synchronicity. It’s just that most of the time you’re so convinced of your separation that you don’t notice. What you call your inner experience and what you call external reality are not two different things interacting. They’re two aspects of a single process happening together, like the two sides of a coin. You can’t have one without the other. They define each other. They are each other seen from different perspectives.)

(Now, there’s a philosophical principle that’s helpful here, something that shows up in mystical traditions all over the world. It’s called the coincidence of opposites. The idea is simple but profound. Reality is built on inseparable differences. You cannot have an inside without an outside. You cannot have an observer without something observed. You cannot have a front without a back, a top without a bottom, a self without another. These opposites don’t just happen to exist together.)

(They require each other. They’re mutually interdependent. Remove one and the other vanishes instantly. So, when we talk about the inside and the outside, your mind and the world these aren’t two separate territories that occasionally interact. They’re two poles of a single phenomenon, like north and south on a magnet. You can’t have just north. The south comes with it automatically, whether you want it or not.)

(Synchronicity appears when these opposites momentarily align in a way that’s obvious even to the separated consciousness. The inner and the outer move together so perfectly that the distinction between them becomes transparent. You see through it. And the reason this feels personal, the reason it feels meaningful, is because the boundary between you and the world has softened.)

(Not because the universe is responding to you, but because you’ve noticed that you were never separate from it in the first place. Let me put it differently. Imagine you’re watching waves on the ocean. One wave rises up and you give it a name.)

(Let’s call it George, George the wave. Now, George might start to believe he’s an individual separate from all the other waves. He might think, “I’m George and I’m moving through this ocean and I have my own journey, my own destiny.” But of course, George is not separate from the ocean. George is the ocean doing a wave thing in one particular location. All the other waves are also the ocean. The ocean is waving everywhere and each wave is just a temporary pattern, a gesture, a movement of the whole.)

(When George notices that his movement matches the movement of another wave, when they rise and fall together, he might think, “Wow, what a coincidence. That wave is synchronized with me.” But actually, they were never not synchronized.)

(Trusting the flow of Life)

(They were both expressions of the same water, the same underlying current, the same tides responding to the same moon. You are like George, and synchronicity is the moment you catch a glimpse of the ocean. So, why don’t we notice this all the time? Why does synchronicity feel rare special, noteworthy? The answer lies in a concept from Taoist philosophy called Wu Wei.)

(It’s often translated as non-action or effortless action, but those translations don’t quite capture it. Wu Wei is more like intelligent non-interference. It’s the art of not forcing, not grasping, not trying to bend reality to your will. Most of the time, you’re in a state of constant effort. You’re trying to control outcomes. You’re resisting what is and demanding what isn’t. You’re planning, predicting, manipulating, strategizing.)

(Your ego is clenched like a fist, trying to shape the world into the image you think it should be. And when you’re in that state, you can’t perceive synchronicity. Not because it isn’t happening, but you’re too busy fighting against the flow of life to notice the flaw at all. Let me give you a metaphor.)

(Imagine you’re swimming. If you’re afraid of the water, you’ll grab at it trying to hold on to something solid. But water isn’t solid. The more you grab, the more you struggle, the more you sink. Your frantic effort works against you, but if you relax, if you soften your body and trust the water, you’ll discover something remarkable. The water supports you. It holds you up. You float. And once you’re floating, you can move through the water with ease, with grace, with almost no effort at all. Life is exactly the same.)

(When you stop forcing, when you stop demanding that reality conform to your plans, something shifts. Not in reality, reality was always moving perfectly, but in your perception. You begin to notice that you’re being carried. You begin to see that the world isn’t hostile or indifferent. It’s coordinated. It’s intelligent. It’s alive. And in that state of relaxation, of openness, of Wu Wei, synchronicities become almost commonplace.)

(Not because you’ve suddenly gained magical powers, but because you’ve stopped blocking awareness of the way things actually work. You’re no longer imposing your narrow expectations onto reality. So, you can see the patterns that were always there. You’re no longer so identified with your separate ego, so you can feel the larger movement you’re part of. You’re no longer grabbing at the water, so you can let it carry you exactly where you need to go. Here’s something important to understand, though.)

(Wu Wei doesn’t mean you become passive. It doesn’t mean you stop acting. Stop making decisions. Stop participating in life. Think of a skilled musician. When they’re playing. They’re not forcing the music. They’re not thinking, “Now I’ll move this finger to this position, and then this finger to that position.” If they try to control every tiny movement consciously, the music would be stiff, mechanical, lifeless. Instead, they’ve practiced so much that the music flows through them. They’re acting, absolutely. Their fingers are moving. Their breath is shaping the sound, but there’s no sense of strain, no separation between the musician and the music. They’ve become one with what they’re doing.)

(Intuition2 vs Logic)

Instinct

(That’s Wu Wei. It’s action that arises spontaneously from the situation itself, not from your ego’s agenda. It’s doing exactly what needs to be done, precisely when it needs to be done, without the middleman of self-conscious control getting in the way. And when you live like this, when you stop trying to force life into narrow channels, and instead respond intelligently to what’s actually happening, you’ll find that events start to align. Doors open at the right time.)

(People appear when you need them. Resources become available just as you’re ready to use them. Not because you’re manifesting them. Not because the universe rewards good behavior. But because you’re moving with the grain of reality instead of against it. You’re dancing instead of fighting. You’re floating instead of drowning. And synchronicities are simply the moments you notice the dance.)

(Let me give you an example of how this works in practice. Imagine you’ve been thinking about changing careers. Maybe you’ve been stuck in a job that doesn’t fulfill you. But you’re afraid to leave. You’re afraid of financial insecurity. Of disappointing people. Of making the wrong choice. So, you’re torn. Part of you wants to leave, and part of you wants to stay safe. And in this state of internal conflict, you’re sending mixed signals into your life. You’re simultaneously moving forward and holding back. Which mean you’re not really moving at all.)

(Now one day you decide to stop forcing a decision. You say to yourself, “I don’t know what to do. And that’s okay. I’ll stay present with this question and see what emerges.” And the moment you relax your grip, something happens. Maybe you run into an old colleague at a café. And they mention a position at their company that sounds perfect for you. Or maybe you pick up a book you’ve owned for years but never read.)

(And there on page 53 is a story about someone who made the exact transition you’re considering. Or maybe you have a dream that brings sudden clarity to the whole situation. Now, the mystically minded person would say, ‘The universe heard me. It sent me a sign.” And they’d be half right. Something intelligent was at work, but it wasn’t an external intelligence sending you information.)

(It was your own deeper intelligence, the intelligence of life itself moving through you, becoming unstuck because you stopped blocking it. You didn’t manifest that colleague. They were already going to that café. But because you were clutching so tightly to your fear, you were open to the encounter. You noticed them. You had the conversation. You didn’t manifest that book. It was already on yourself. But because you weren’t forcing an answer, you were receptive to information. Your hand reached for it at the right moment. You see, synchronicity isn’t about the universe rearranging itself for you. It’s about you finally getting out of your own way so you can perceive the intelligence that was always there.)

(Now, I want to take this even deeper because we’re approaching something that might seem mystical, but is actually quite practical. The universe or life or reality, whatever word you prefer, is not a collection of separate things bumping into each other randomly.)

(How Opportunities Appear Naturally)

(It’s a web, a net, an interconnected field of relationships where everything influences everything else. Not through mechanical force, but through resonance, through pattern, through shared participation in a single event.)

(Think about a spider’s web. The web is held together by the mutual support of every thread. Pull one strand and the entire web trembles. Not because the pull traveled mechanically from strand to strand, but the whole web is one thing. The strands don’t exist independently and then come together. The web is the relationship and the strands are what that relationship look like.)

(You are a strand in the web of life and what you think of as inside you, your thoughts, your emotions, your intentions, these aren’t separate from the web. They’re movements in the web, vibrations, patterns. And when a pattern appears in one part of the web, it resonates throughout the whole. Not through magic, through the same principle that makes tuning forks3 vibrate when another tuning fork of the same pitch is stuck nearby.)

(Through the same principle that makes birds flock and fish school without a central coordinator. Through the intelligence of the whole, which is always seeking balance, always seeking pattern, always seeking harmony. This is why when you change internally, really change, not just think different thoughts, but shift your entire mode of being, your external circumstances begin to shift as well. Not instantly, not mechanically, but organically, the web rearranges itself around the new pattern you’ve become and synchronicities are simply the moments you notice this rearrangement happening.)

(They’re the evidence written in the language of your daily life that you are a separate thing in a mechanical universe. You’re an integral part of a living, intelligent, self-organizing whole. So, let’s talk about what this means for how you live. If synchronicity is real, not as magic, but as a fundamental feature of reality, then your entire relationship to life needs to change.)

(You can’t keep seeing yourself as a separate ego trying to control an indifferent world. That model doesn’t fit the facts. Instead, you have to recognize that you’re always in conversation with life, always. Every thought you think, every action you take, every emotion you feel is a gesture in an ongoing dance. And life is gesturing back constantly through circumstances, through encounters, through what you call coincidences.)

(But here’s the key. You can’t control the conversation. You can’t decide in advance what life will say back to you. If you try, you’ll just end up talking to yourself, hearing only the echoes of your own expectations. Instead, you have to learn to listen, to pay attention, to notice what’s actually happening, rather than what you think should happening. To follow the thread of synchronicity wherever it leads, even if it takes you somewhere unexpected.)

(This is what it means to live in Wu Wei. It’s not passive, because you’re still acting, still making choices, still participating. But your actions are responses to what life is offering in each moment, rather than attempts to force life into a predetermined plan.)

(Letting Go of Fear and Control)

(Let me give you another image. Imagine you’re having a conversation with a friend. A real conversation. Where you’re both engaged, both present, both genuinely interested in what the other has to say. Now, if you came into that conversation with a script, with every word you plan to say already decided in advance, it wouldn’t be a conversation at all. It would be a monologue, and you’d miss every…)

Harari: The Generation That Remembers What Life Was Really Like Is Ending || Yuval Harari

          https://youtu.be/-GWeCLen3lw?si=E558MuQFP-bEYkZR

(Have you ever stopped to think you might be part of one of the last moments in human history when there are still people alive who remember what life was like before smartphones, before the internet? Before our existence became completely intertwined with algorithms and screen?)

(There’s strange melancholy in realizing that at this exact moment, as you hear these words, you’re witnessing the silent end of something that humanity has carried for thousands of years. The living memory of purely analog existence, where boredom was possible, where silence didn’t need to be filled, where anxiety had defined temporal limits because there was no possibility of being always connected, always available, always being bombarded by information. This isn’t just a nostalgic reflection on time past, but an urgent investigation into what we’re losing without even noticing, and why it matters more than we imagine.)

(Consider for a moment your grandmother or grandfather, if they’re still alive, or think about the elderly people you know. They carry in their minds something that will soon be completely extinct, the bodily, emotional, and cognitive memory of what it was like live in the world where human attention was not a commercialized product, where relationships were not mediated by digital interfaces, where knowledge had weight and scarcity, where time passed in a fundamentally different way.)

(When they were young, a letter took days or weeks to reach its recipient. And this delay wasn’t seen as a technical problem to be solved, but simply as the temporal nature of human communication. When they wanted to know something, they had to go to a library, search through books, ask people, and often the answer simply wasn’t available. And this was accepted as a normal part of the human condition.)

(We’re going through a historical transition comparable only to humanity’s great revolutions, the agricultural revolution that took us from nomadic life, the industrial revolution that took us from the countryside to cities. And now the digital revolution that is taking us from physical reality to a hybrid reality where our experience is constantly filtered, optimized, and commodified by algorithms. But unlike previous transitions, which took centuries or at least decades to complete, this one is happening at the speed of one or two generations.)

(In just 20 years, we’ve gone from a world where most human experience happened offline1 to a world where practically every significant experience has some digital component. What makes this transition particularity disturbing is that it’s not being driven by fundamental human need, but by economic and technological imperatives that operate according to their own logic, often contrary to human welfare. The attention economy has transformed our capacity for focus into a resource to be extracted. Similar to how the Industrial Revolution transformed natural resources into commodities.)

(Our minds have become territories to be colonized by corporations that have developed more sophisticated technologies to capture and maintain our attention than any propaganda or social control system that ever existed in human history. The generation that still remembers what it was like to live before this mental colonization is literally dying. When the last person who lived the entire youth without the internet dies, something irretrievable will be lost forever. Not just information or customs, but a form of consciousness. A quality of experience that cannot be documented in books or videos because it is fundamentally experiential.)

(It’s like trying to explain to someone who has never experienced silence what true silence is like. Or trying to describe to someone who has always had access to GPS what it meant to get truly lost. Having to trust your own intuition and the kindness of strangers to find your way. Think about the last time you were truly bored. Not that boredom that is immediately interrupted by checking your phone, but deep contemplative boredom that forces the mind to wander down unprogrammed paths that creates space for genuinely original thoughts to emerge from nothing.)

(The previous generation knew this kind of boredom as a regular, almost daily, experience. They knew what it meant to spend hours waiting in line with nothing to do but observe other people and let their minds wander. They knew what it was to have conversation that started without a specific purpose and extended for hours without interruptions, without the anxiety of missing something important happening online. This loss is not merely sentimental.)

(There is growing scientific evidence that the type of cognition we develop when we not constantly stimulated by external inputs is fundamentally different and potentially superior in many ways to the type of cognition we develop in digitally hyper-stimulated environments. The capacity for sustained attention, the ability to enter deep flow states, the capacity to tolerate ambiguity and uncertainty without immediately seeking external answers, the ability to form lasting and meaningful memories, all these cognitive capacities seem to be atrophying in populations that grew up entirely in digital environments.)

(But what’s even more concerning is that we’re losing not just individual cognitive capacities, but also forms of sociability and intimacy that took thousands of years to develop. The previous generation knew how to be present with another person in a way that become almost impossible for us. They knew how to have conversations that weren’t performed for imaginary audiences, how to develop relationships that didn’t leave digital traces, how to keep aspects of their lives genuinely private, not because they were hiding something, but because privacy was seen as a necessary condition for developing a rich and authentic inner life.)

(When this generation completely disappears, we will live in the world where no one alive will be able to remember what human experience was like before it was optimized, quantified, and monetized. It will be like living in a city where all the old buildings have been demolished and replaced by modern constructions. We lose the ability to imagine what the previous architecture was like because there’s no longer a physical reference except that in this case, it’s not buildings being demolished, but forms of consciousness, patterns of attention, qualities of experience that once defined what it meant to be human.)

(We can already see the first symptoms of this loss in younger generations who demonstrate levels of anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating unprecedented in human history. Instead of questioning whether there’s a connection between these symptoms and the digital environment which these generations grew up, the predominant response has been develop more technology to solve the problems created by technology.)

(Meditation apps to combat anxiety caused by other apps, digital productivity tools to help with lack of focus caused by other digital tools, online mental health platforms to treat depression caused in part by social isolation facilitated by other online platforms. This is a particularly modern form of insanity. Using the same tools that created a problem to try to solve the problem, instead of questioning whether the tools themselves might be the problem.)

(It’s like to cure food poisoning by eating more of the same food that caused the poisoning, but in smaller portions at more regulated times. The logic seems sensible on the surface, but completely ignores the possibility that the real solution is to stop consuming the toxic substance. The tragedy is that many of the people making decisions about how technology should be developed and implemented have no personal memory of what life is like before these technologies. They genuinely cannot imagine that there are ways to organize society and human experience that don’t depend on constant digital optimization.)

(Then. The idea of living without smartphones or internet is not an option to be considered, but a primitive impossibility, like suggesting we return to living in caves. But the generation that still remembers offers a crucial perspective. They know it’s possible to be happy, productive, and connected with other human beings without depending on technologies that monetize our attention. They lived that reality. The know that deep and lasting relationships can be formed without dating apps. They know it’s possible to learn new and interesting things without algorithms personalizing our educational experience.)

(They know it’s possible to be entertained without streaming platforms fed by behavioral data. They know it’s possible to work efficiently without tools that monitor every click and every eye movement. This is not an argument for returning to an idealized past, but a call for us to recognize what we’re losing before it’s too late. There are aspects of modern life that are genuinely superior to the past. We have access to information and educational opportunities that previous generations couldn’t even dream of. We have global communication capabilities that can facilitate forms of collaboration and mutual understanding without precedent.)

(We have tools that can help solve complex problems and improve the quality of life for billions of people, The problem is not technology itself, but our inability to use these tools consciously and intentionally. Instead of allowing technology to shape our lives according to its own logic, we need to develop the wisdom to decide when and how to use these tools in ways that genuinely serve our deepest interests and values. And this wisdom can only come from a clear understanding of what life was like before these technologies, what options exist beyond them and what types of human experience we’re willing to sacrifice in the name of efficiency and connectivity.)

(The urgency of this issue cannot be underestimated. Each year that passes we lose more people who carried this alternative memory of human experience which each generation born entirely immersed digital environments, it becomes harder to imagine that there are other ways to organize consciousness and society. Soon we will the point where humanity will completely forget what was life to live in a purely analog way and at that moment certain options will become literally unthinkable.)

(It’s fascinating and terrifying to realize that we’re living through a transformation so fundamental to the to the human condition the future generations might look back and see our era as the moment when humanity split into two species, analog Homo Sapiens and the transition between these two species is happening not through slow biological evolution but through behavioral and cognitive changes that can be implemented in a matter of years or even months.)

(I want to pause for a moment to ask you directly, ‘When was the last time you spent an entire day without checking any digital device? When was the last time you had a deep conversation with someone without either of you consulting a phone during the conversation. When was the last time you allowed yourself to get truly lost without GPS and had to figure out the way using only your own navigation skills and the help of other people?’

(If these experiences seem strange or unnecessarily difficult, perhaps that’s a sign of how deeply we’ve already been transformed by technologies we didn’t always consciously choose to adopt. And if you recognize this sense of loss, if you feel that something important has been sacrificed in the name of convenience and connectivity, share in the comments, “I feel we lost some essence of human life when we stopped.” Your reflection can help other people name something that many pf us feel but rarely discuss openly. The implications of this transition go far beyond individual personal experiences.)

(We’re witnessing the end of forms of knowledge that cannot be digitized because they depend on bodily experience, intuition developed over decades, and types of wisdom that can only be transmitted through prolonged coexistence between generations.)

(The farmer who knows when to plant by observing subtle signs in animal behavior and almost imperceptible changes in the quality of light, the craftsman who has developed tactile sensibility sufficient to feel differences in material texture that no digital sensor can detect, the grandmother, who knows if a child is really sick or just wanting attention based on decades of experience observing human of behavior?)

(This kind of embodied knowledge is being rapidly replaced by algorithms and sensors that may be more precise in many cases, but that operate according to a completely different logic. An algorithm can be programmed to recognize patterns, but cannot develop intuition. An artificial intelligence can process large amount of data about human behavior, but cannot develop genuine empathy based on lived experience.)

(A sensor can measure temperature and humidity accurately, but cannot feel the quality of air the way someone who spent decades working outdoors and feel. When the last generation that develop these kinds non-digitized sensibility.)
